THE Announcement

March 2010

Congratulations

Congratulations to the following for their awesome help!

Chip Freund - Scouter of the Year (for his many contributions to the troop in the last year!)

Angela Greene - Scouting Service award (for her years of service in so many ways to the troop!)

New Faces

This month brings the addition of many new faces into the troop with the bridging ceremonies of several Cub Scout Packs.   Please remember to demonstrate through your actions that the Scout Law has importance with these new members to your troop.  Troop Guides are needed to work with these new Scouts in learning the skills necessary for enjoying Scouting.  Also remember that with the addition of these new Scouts that Pedro Bootcamp will be part of the March campout activities at the Durham County Wildlife Club.   Please contact Quinn, your SPL, if you can help in the planned activities that are part of Bootcamp or would like to be a Troop Guide.

March Campout (by Kevin John)

I will be the Campmaster for our March Campout at the Durham County Wildlife Club (website below).  I am honored to host what I feel is the first camping trip of the year for Troop 210.  This campout will be the first one for our incoming Pedro's. Our older Scouts will be honoring Troop 210's long standing tradition teaching our newest Troop 210 Boy Scouts how to camp and prepare for First Class..

I would like to start a new tradition where we invite any Scout, Scouters or anyone else that was associated with Troop 210 to join us in welcoming our newest Scouts, Leaders and Parents into the Troop.  Please feel free to share this invitation with any and all past or present members of Troop 210.

Mr. Hornberg (Pedro Bob), our SPL Quinn Burgess and our Senior Scouts will be planning the schedule for the Pedro's.   I'm in charge of the logistics, marketing and fun.

Fun:

I will have a skeet range reserved Friday night for the adults and Saturday morning for the Scouts to participate in the Troop 210 first annual Pedro Bootcamp/Homecoming Campout Skeet Tournament.  This will be a fun shoot for all and a reward for the Scouts setting up the Campsite.  Scouters, Parents and any Alumni are also invited to participate. Prizes will be awarded.

The Tournament:

Scouts, Scouters, Parents and Alumni that wish to participate in shooting skeet will need to let me know via email if you will be shooting and Scouts need to sign up at the meetings or reply to this email..

Crew 111 and I will be supplying the shotguns and I will be purchasing the shells.  Cost should be $9 per round per person.  Certified Range Officers and Instructors will be present so everyone will be safe  but we need to know how many shells to have on hand.

Please help me make this a Campout to remember for our newest Scouts.

What is Skeet?

In Skeet, targets cross in front of you, and always follow the same path.

The skeet field is arranged with two separate target throwing houses, one high (where the target exits the house at a height of approx. 10 feet above ground level), and one low house (where the target exits the house at a height of approx. 3 feet above ground level). The target path is set, and the birds will always follow the same path of flight.

There are 8 separate shooting positions (referred to as "stations"), with 7 arranged in a semi-circle with a radius of 21 yards, measured the point where the targets cross to the various stations.

A "round" is fired with a squad of up to 5 shooters, all starting at station 1, and then all progressing across to the different stations as a group.

A full round of skeet consists of 25 targets, with one shot fired at each target.

Station 1 - One high house bird, one low house bird, and one pair of doubles is shot.

Station 2 - Repeat the sequence. High, low, double. (On doubles, the high house bird is fired at first.)

Station 3: one high; one low.

Station 4: one high, one low.

Station 5: one high; one low.

Station 6: high, low, double. (On doubles, the low house bird is fired at first.)

Station 7: high, low, double. (On doubles, the low house bird is fired at first.)

Station 8: high, low.

The first bird missed by a shooter is immediately repeated, and this is called the "option." If a shooter hits the first 24 birds without missing, the option becomes the last bird fired (station 8, low), which is repeated.

Formal competition is based on shotgun gauge, and 12, 20, 28, and .410 bore shotguns are all used.

Skeet requires an open choke gun, such as "Cylinder," "Skeet", or "Improved Cylinder". Use of a tighter choke makes this game EXTREMELY difficult!

Typical shot sizes used are #9, and #8. Note that shot sizes LARGER than 7-1/2 are prohibited at trap and skeet courses. This is because the larger shot sizes retain too much energy during flight, and un-necessarily extend the hazardous "shot fall zone".
