Cape Lookout

 

Let’s go fishing!!!

Cape Lookout Campout, May 17-18, 2008

 

Saturday, May 17th

·       6:30 am - meet at White Plains UMC, depart at 7:00 am

·       8:30 – 9:00 am - stop at Neuse Sport Shop in Kinston (halfway point) for bait and tackle

·       10:30 pm – arriving in Harker’s Island and board local people ferry!!!

·       11:00 pm - take ferry over to Cape Lookout

·       11:30 pm – arrive at Cape Lookout and setup camp, bag lunch at our campsite.

·       Camp just inside the tree line or along the beach, 1-200 yards from the lighthouse!

·       Fish all afternoon and evening if you want (in the surf, on the T-dock, and on several boats)!!!

·       Troop cooking for dinner - Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for dinner with the fixins & some fish if we are lucky!

·       Capture the flag or surf fishing on the beach that night!!!

 

Sunday, May 18th

Breakfast at Cape Lookout, Troop format, most likely breakfast bars, coffee and Sunny D

·       Early am fishing, church, then break camp

·       10:00 am - leave Cape Lookout and return to Harker’s Island on board people ferry

·       12:00 pm - quick fast food lunch in New Bern

·       3:00 pm (approximately) - arriving back in Cary at White Plains UMC.

 

MONEY $$$:

·       $40 to be given to your Patrol Leader during Patrol Corners on May 12th.  Checks are acceptable, but they must be made out to BSA Troop 210).  Cost is derived as follows:

·       $10 cash per scout for car gas  (with gas prices through the roof, we must charge more)

·       $15 people ferry to Cape Lookout 

·       $15 cash for troop food, boat gas and bait for campout

·       $10-15 for personal Expenses to and from Harkers Island

·       This is for snacks during drive on Saturday as well as a late lunch on the  way home on Sunday

Notes:

·       In the event of inclement weather (i.e. Gale)  we will leave Cape Lookout and return to Harkers Island

·       Class B Troop t-shirt for the entire trip. Non boy scout t-shirts are not allowed

·       Travel light!!! Make sure your sleeping bag and personal gear is in a daypack or duffel bag (couple of trash bags to make it waterproof are fine). If you have any questions, please ask!

·       DO NOT BRING onto the island

o      too much gear (chairs are ok for adults only)

o      cell phones

o      game boys (leave them in the car)

o      anything that can be damaged by salt water.

·       Remember to Bring

o      Bring poncho

o      Water bottle

o      Sunscreen

o      Bug spray

o      Bathing suit

o      Saltwater Fishing license (if 16 or over)

o      Towel

o      Old shoes

o      Minimal Fishing tackle (No large tackle boxes please, Carolina Bottom rigs should do just fine)


·       Each boater will have bait and plenty of rods if you want to leave yours at home. Leave hooks off of your rods during transport.

·       Bathrooms are near the lighthouse. Showers were built last year. They should be operational.

·       Raccoons are on the island. No personal food in tents.

·       We will do troop cooking to reduce amount of gear to be transported.

·       You only need to bring a bag lunch for Friday and $$$ for eating both ways.

 

Directions to Harkers Island:

o      Head southeast on SE Maynard Rd toward Ralph Dr - 1.1 mi

o      Turn right at Cary Towne Blvd - 0.8 mi

o      Merge onto I-40 E via the ramp to Raleigh - 13.6 mi

o      Take exit 306 to merge onto US-70 E toward Goldsboro/Smithfield - 20.2 mi

o      Take the ramp on onto US-70-BYP S/US Hwy 70 Bypass E Continue to follow US Hwy 70 Bypass E - 2.9 mi

o      Continue on US-70 E to Goldsboro - 18.5 mi

o      As you approach Goldsboro, there is a cloverleaf right onto the US-70-BYP E/US-117-BYP N/US-13 N ramp - 0.2 mi

o      Merge onto Dr Martin Luther King Jr Expy/US-117-BYP N/US-13 N/US-70 E  Continue to follow US-70 E – 78.6 mi

o      Left onto at Fontana Blvd/NC-101  Continue to follow NC-101 - 16.1 mi

o      Turn left at Laurel Rd - 2.3 mi

o      Turn right at Merrimon Rd - 2.4 mi

o      Turn left at US-70 - 4.9 mi

o      Turn right at Harkers Island Rd - 2.3 mi

o      Slight right to stay on Harkers Island Rd - 2.1 mi

o      Continue on Island Rd/Straits Rd  Continue to follow Island Rd - 2.3 mi

Summer Camp Information

 

Troop 210 will be going to Camp Raven Knob and Ottari this summer.  Below is detailed information:

 

·      If you want to see the merit badge offerings, we will have those available soon for Ottari.

Crosswinds District 2008 NYLT

 

The date for next year’s NYLT are August 3-9 2008: before this program can take place we need staff, adult and youth, we need older youth staff that have attended the old council JLT and those that have attended the latest NYLT, but we will consider anyone recommended by their unit leader.  For more information and details please contact: Kathy Connelly "kathyconnelly@nc.rr.com"
